Why do dosing pump prices vary so much? A practical breakdown of solenoid, diaphragm and peristaltic technologies, flow and pressure ratings, PVDF/PTFE wetted parts, control and accessories.

Where the Price Gap Starts: Three Pump Technologies
The biggest differences in dosing pump prices come from the operating principle. Three technologies dominate the market: solenoid-driven diaphragm pumps, motor-driven diaphragm pumps and peristaltic (tube) pumps. Each targets a different flow and pressure envelope and a different service-life expectation, so price comparisons only make sense within the same technology class.
Solenoid pumps are the most economical entry point. Covering roughly 0.4–110 L/h at 1–20 bar back pressure, they are the workhorse of swimming pools, cooling towers and small water treatment skids. They have few moving parts, their electronic drive allows fine stroke and frequency adjustment, and power consumption is low.
Motor-driven diaphragm pumps extend the range to 5–1000 L/h using a geared motor and crank mechanism, delivering continuous, higher-flow and higher-pressure dosing. They are heavier and more expensive, yet on 24/7 process lines their lifetime cost is frequently lower. Peristaltic pumps are chosen for gassing chemicals such as sodium hypochlorite or for viscous fluids, since they cannot air-lock; their price depends mainly on tube material and drive quality.
Flow and Pressure Rating: What Changes as Capacity Grows
Even within one technology, price climbs with rated flow (L/h) and maximum back pressure (bar). A 5 L/h, 10 bar solenoid pump and a 100 L/h, 3 bar unit in the same series need different diaphragm diameters, different pump heads and different drive power.
Higher pressure means thicker diaphragms, stiffer valve springs and heavier head walls. As you approach the 16–20 bar class, heads and fittings move to more expensive materials. Specifying a 16 bar pump when the duty point is really 4 bar therefore inflates the quote for no benefit.
The right approach is to calculate back pressure as line pressure plus injection valve spring pressure plus friction loss, then add a 20–30 percent margin. Running the pump between 30 and 80 percent of capacity is the sweet spot for both price and dosing accuracy.
Wetted Materials: PVC, PP, PVDF and PTFE
Pump head, valve bodies, diaphragm facing and seals are the most overlooked price items. The same pump in a PVC head and in a PVDF head can differ noticeably in cost, while the wrong material can destroy a pump within months.
PVC and PP are an economical baseline for sodium hypochlorite, dilute sulphuric acid and most water treatment chemicals. PVDF stands out for hydrochloric acid, concentrated oxidisers and temperatures above 60 °C. PTFE diaphragms and FPM (Viton) or EPDM seals are selected chemical by chemical.

Control Type: From Manual Dial to 4–20 mA and Pulse Input
The level of control is the second major axis of dosing pump pricing. A constant-output model with a manual dial or keypad is the cheapest option: the operator sets the flow and the pump runs continuously. For a small pool or simple pre-chlorination this may be all you need.
Where proportional dosing is required, you move to models that accept pulses from a water meter with multiply/divide functions, or that follow a 4–20 mA analogue signal from a PLC or analyser. These drives add a display, level input, alarm relay and remote stop, which lifts the price band.
One step further are pumps with built-in pH, redox or chlorine measurement that close the control loop themselves, often cheaper overall than a separate controller plus pump. Communication options such as Modbus also add cost where automation integration is required.
Brand and Series: SEKO Tekna, Invikta and Kronos
Two pumps with identical technical data still differ in price by brand and series. You are paying not only for plastic and metal but for drive firmware, calibration accuracy, spare part availability and service network. Accessories and Installation Items
A dosing pump quote is never just the pump. Injection valve, foot valve with strainer, level switch, chemical tank, mixer, suction and discharge tubing, calibration column and, where needed, a pulsation dampener all shape the total. Together they can amount to a significant share of the pump price.
Higher pressures or long discharge lines call for a multifunction valve, pressure relief valve and back-pressure valve, a frequent reason for differences between quotes. A quote that looks cheap may simply be missing accessories, so ask for the scope list item by item before comparing.

What to Share When Requesting a Quote
Sharing accurate data up front is far cheaper than revising later. In order of impact, dosing pump price is driven by technology, flow and pressure, wetted materials, control type, brand and series, and accessory scope.
At minimum, state the chemical and its concentration, target dose (ppm or L/h), main line flow (m³/h), pressure at the injection point (bar), temperature, supply voltage (230 V AC or 24 V DC), control signal type and installation environment (indoor, outdoor, IP rating).
