What Is a Butterfly Valve and Where Is It Used?

A butterfly valve is a compact valve type that opens, closes, or throttles flow through the 90° rotation of a disc mounted on the pipeline's axis. Thanks to its low weight, short face-to-face length, and low pressure drop, it is a cost-effective solution compared to ball and gate valves on large-diameter lines.

Vanera's rubber-seated concentric butterfly valves are used reliably in water and wastewater treatment, seawater lines, HVAC systems, food, paper, chemical, petrochemical, and iron & steel plants. EPDM, NBR, and Viton seal options allow the sealing material to be matched to the process fluid.

Technical Specifications

Manufactured in DN40-DN500 for the wafer type and DN40-DN400 for the lug type; rated for PN10, PN16, and PN25 pressure classes and a -20°C / +200°C temperature range. Flange compatibility follows DIN 2501 PN6/PN10/PN16 and ANSI B16.15 Class 150 standards.

The body is GG25, GGG40, or AISI316 stainless steel; the disc is AISI316 stainless steel or aluminum bronze; the shaft is AISI420 stainless steel. The one-piece shaft design prevents disc deflection, the broaching technique increases shaft strength, and bi-directional sealing is achieved.

Automation and Actuator Compatibility

Thanks to the ISO 5211:2023 top flange, pneumatic or electric actuators can be mounted without requiring an additional adaptor; butterfly valves can be used in both on-off and proportional control applications.
