What Is a Ball Valve and Where Is It Used?

A ball valve is a valve type that provides full open-close operation through the 90° rotation of a ball with a flow bore through it, offering high sealing performance and fast operation. The PTFE-seated ball design delivers a long service life and low-torque operation.

Vanera's ball valve portfolio includes 2-piece and 3-piece threaded valves with AISI304 and AISI316 stainless steel bodies, 2-piece flanged valves, full AISI316 wafer monobloc valves, and segment ball valves for proportional control.

Technical Specifications

Threaded types range from DN15-DN100 (1/2"-4") up to PN63; flanged types are PN16/PN40 (EN 1092-1 RF flange, EN 558-1 Series 14); the wafer monobloc type is rated PN16. Standard operating temperature is -30°C / +120°C, and -20°C / +220°C for segment ball valves.

The body, ball, and stem are AISI304 or AISI316 stainless steel; seat and stem seal are PTFE. The segment type uses a hard chrome-plated ball (AISI304+HCr / AISI316+HCr) and an FKM (Viton) O-ring. Models with an ISO 5211 top flange are ready for actuator mounting.

Proportional Control with Segment Ball Valves

Segment ball valves offer an equal-percentage flow characteristic through their V-shaped ball segment and are used as control valves. They are manufactured in the DN25-DN250 size range at PN10-PN16 pressure classes; Kv values start at 31 m³/h for DN25. Flow control is achieved with a pneumatic or electric actuator and a positioner.
